We started our Foster / Adopt process March 2006. We have been told that the process (start - getting a child) takes about one year.
Steps to becoming a Foster Parent in Columbia, SC
1) Contact the Depart of Social Services to request an application.
2) Fill out the application and call to schedule a time to have your finger prints taken at S.L.E.D.
3) Have 3 people that you and your spouse have known for many years fill out a reference form for you. This is the part that slows down the process if they are not quickly turned in.
4) A criminal background check will be performed
5) If you are accepted, you will then schedule foster parent training with your social worker. The classes are GREAT! 14 hours of continuing education are required yearly to keep your license current.
6) Your home will be inspected (home study) and a fire inspection will be needed. The social worker will come out with the fire marshall for this.
7) Do some research on the needs of Foster children ... remember, they didn't choose for this to happen in their lives. They will be afraid, and although YOU will believe that you are ready and may even love them already ... they won't even know you, and it may take some time for them to reciprocate those same feelings. Be patient.
8) Prepare a room, and prepare your hearts for a child who will need your unconditional love and guidance.
